Youth Civic Showcase
No matter what, I always get far more out of wonderful events like that than I could possibly contribute, and I am writing to thank you for the invitation to attend.
I spoke to the "Don't SPOT the Dot" group alone, and asked about rats; they reported that the population declined, and that a Chinese grocer had been very surprised and appreciative that his rat problem had been resolved when he was encouraged to cease his practice of keeping oils and other "food" near, not in, the dumpster. read more »

Woburn Youth Build Social Capital in Dorchester
On Saturday, March 29 at 450 Washington Street in Dorchester, SCI's Lynn, Woburn and Dorchester Youth council's were building social capital. The youth started their day off with a networking activity to get them aware of what they do everyday but to take it a step further.
Youth dined on a beautiful and tasty nutritious organic lunch , which was prepared by Miscellaneous. She prepared a mouth watering potato and egg salad, a batch of chicken which was either curry, BBQ or plain, a beautiful crisp bright juicy salad with her famously renowned mustard dressing and tofu.
After lunch, the youth was actively engaged in 3 presentations which all had one theme, social capital. The youth program coordinators from all 3 SCI sites: Lynn, Woburn and Dorchester talked about how music and art are ways people create social change. With music from Billy Holiday "Strange Fruit" and art from J.W. Turner "The Slave Ship", all helped the youth think of how simple things make a difference.
It doesn't take a whole lot of brain power to make something happen. Here is the formula to make social change.
Things you need:
1. An issue to address
2. A medium (canvas, paper, speaking, singing, etc.)
3. The most important piece. You!!! read more »

Mini-Grant Congratulations
Congratulations to the Mini-Grant Award recipients for taking the first steps to improve the Woburn community. On the behalf of Social Capital Inc (SCI), CHNA and the Woburn Youth Council I commend you for being active citizens in your community.
Civic engagement is the cornerstone of building healthy communities. All of the award recipients for 2008 have explicitly answered the needs of the Woburn residents. More importantly, you are encouraged to identify a need and apply for the Mini-Grant Award coming in 2008-2009. We encourage you to remain cognizant of the needs in your community so we can collectively keep the Mini-Grant legacy alive.
Please contact me for more information or volunteer opportunities.

Youth & Adult Connections
On Tuesday January 29, 2008 the Woburn Youth Council conducted the annual Youth and Adult Connections Forum at New Horizons.
The primary objective of the forum was for youth to engage in a dialogue centered on civic concerns. Youth contributed creative ways to improve their community and adults brought a sense of reason and practicality to executing the new ideas. Bridging the generational gap always enlightens youth and enhances their ability to find solutions. read more »

Meeting Follow Up 11/13/07
Hey guys!
So I just want to say congratulations ot all the new WYC inductees. We are all excited to kick off our year with a bunch of service projects.
Just as a reminder, veteran Youth Council members should have turned in their canned foods for the Thanksgiving basket by now. Make sure you did that.
Our next meeting is on Tuesday the 20th at 7PM upstairs at the Boys and Girls Club. I won't be there personally, and neither will Jill, so hopefully someone else can step it up and do a post-meeting blog. (please!)
