Uniting Diverse Individuals & Groups

All of SCI's work seeks to bring all members of the community together, creating bridges across barriers that too often divide us in society.  This page highlights some of SCI Woburn's major efforts to unite diverse members of our community.

  • Citizens Park Summer Concert Series:  SCI joins the Woburn Redevelopment Authority (WRA) and the Woburn Residents Environmental Network (WREN) to present the Citizens Park Concert Series.  In its fourth year, the series rrings a diverse array of talented musical groups to perform for Woburn residents.  Seven concerts will be presented this summer.  View the full line-up.
  • Neighborhood Day: Woburn Neighborhood Day is a new event that was held on Sunday, September 11th. Through this project residents were encouraged to participate in projects that improve their neighborhood while fostering connections among neighbors. This project tied into National Neighborhood Day, and builds upon similar efforts in the past such as WREN and SCI's 911 Daffodil Planting, and other community improvement projects.
  • MLK Day / Civil Rights Forum:  SCI has partnered with St. John's Baptist Church and the City of Woburn to help make Martin Luther King Day a unifying community wide celebration.  In addition, we have developed a "Civil Rights Forum" that has enabled Woburn Memorial High School students to learn about the civil rights movement from individuals with significant knowledge of the subject.  Speakers have included:  Rev. Larry Edmunds, addressing the role of churches in the movement; Judge Gordon Martin, who talked about his work in Mississippi prosecuting voting rights cases for the Justice Department; and Woburn native Nick Paleologos, who produced the movies Mississippi Burning and The Ghosts of Mississippi.  Based on their learning through the Forum, participating students will be teaching elementary students about the civil rights movement.
  • SCI Network Meetings:  SCI convenes organizations and individuals interested in our work approximately once per quarter.  These network meetings provide an opportunity for those interested to help shape the direction of our work.  The meetings also include time for other community groups to share information about their projects.  Notice of these meetings is posted to the SCI email list.
