The Count Rumford Ornament

Birthplace of Benjamin Thompson (1753 -1814)

Scholar, Soldier, Spy, Statesman and Scientist

Benjamin Thompson (Count Rumford) was born on March 26, 1753 at 90 Elm Street in Woburn, MA in a house built about 1714 by his grandfather. It is now preserved as a museum and is on the List of National Historic Landmarks and the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1772, he met and married a well-to-do widow named Sarah Walker Rolfe in Rumford (now called Concord), New Hampshire. Through his wife's influence with the governor, he was appointed a Major in the New Hampshire Militia. When the American Revolution began, he was opposed to the rebels and so was welcomed by the British, to whom he gave valuable information about the American forces. He left for England in 1776.

In 1785, he moved to Bavaria where he spent eleven years reorganizing the army and establishing workhouses for the poor. He studied methods of cooking, heating, and lighting. Thompson was an inventor, developing improvements for chimneys and fireplaces (Rumford Fireplace) and inventing the double boiler, a kitchen range, and a drip coffeepot. He was made a Count of the Holy Roman Empire in 1791.

Thompson endowed the Rumford Medals of the Royal Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a professorship at Harvard University. In 1803, he was elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Rumford died in 1814 and was buried near Paris, where he had spent the last years of his life.
