Letter Carriers' Food Drive

Council of Social ConcernCouncil of Social Concern began operating a Food Pantry in 1984 and, since that time, they have never had more individuals and families turning to them for help than they do now.  With usage up approximately 35% since last year at this time, it is a real challenge to provide enough nutritious food choices for those in our city who are struggling to keep up with their most basic needs.  These could be your friends, neighbors, relatives, schoolmates, teammates, co-workers and members of your congregation or civic organization.  The face of hunger is not always apparent, but it exists in record numbers here at home.

Enter our friends at the Woburn Post Office!  This year, they will be conducting the annual Henry Shaughnessy Memorial Food Drive on Saturday, October 31, to benefit the Council's Food Pantry.  For a number of years, they have chosen to run this additional food drive in the fall to honor the memory of one of their own, Henry Shaughnessy.  Henry wore the Letter Carrier’s uniform for over 50 years and embodied the spirit of serving.  He was a dedicated and compassionate public servant who delivered kindness and good will along with the mail.

Because the need is greater than ever before, the Woburn Letter Carriers are hoping this will be their most successful food drive.  They are willing to do the extra amount of work necessary to collect food along their routes and deliver it to our Food Pantry.  For them to meet their goal, however, it’s up to us, as a community, to be as generous as we can and leave food out for them to collect.

So when you’re picking up your Halloween candy, please consider picking up a few food items for the Food Drive.  It will make a real difference to our “neighbors in need”!

Please remember to put out your non-perishable food donations, within date and preferably not in glass jars, on Saturday, October 31 before 9:00 a.m.  Your Letter Carrier will collect it for the Council of Social Concern’s Food Pantry.  If you don’t have time to shop and would like to make a monetary donation, please make your check payable to “Council of Social Concern Food Pantry” and leave it clearly marked for your Letter Carrier.
