2008 Mini-Grant Award Recipients Make a Difference in Woburn
The Woburn Youth Council (WYC) Mini-Grant Award recipients for 2008 are addressing a variety of issues. Although some projects are annual, they uniquely touch the lives of Woburn residents every year. This year’s projects are focused on beautification, conflict resolution, literacy and domestic improvements.
One Mini-Grant project is new and much needed. We are proud to announce our support for Rachel’s Challenge, courtesy of the Woburn Police Department. Rachel’s Challenge provides school based conflict resolution and the education of Woburn Public School students regarding healthy choices and relationships.
We also honor the Intrepid Keystone Club for their continual efforts. This year the Intrepid Keystone Club is coordinating two projects: Read Across Woburn and Teen Awareness Night. Read Across Woburn celebrates Read Across America Day and the importance of literacy amongst adolescents. Teen Awareness Night will focus on the prevention and intervention of underage drinking.
The Tanners Torch Club is also doing two projects this year, one of which is "A Safe Place to Play." Several Torch Club members noticed that the playground near the Plympton School needs some aesthetic care and child friendly refurbishment. As a result, the Tanners Torch Club is taking action to revamp the playground's landscape.
In addition, the Tanners Torch club will coordinate a project that will benefit the Mission of Deeds program. Mission of Deeds is an organization located in Reading, Massachusetts that provides domestic charity by giving house-hold items, furniture, and home goods to those in need. The Mini-Grant Award will pay for over-head expenditures for the spring fundraiser, which will enlist the support of Woburn families, teachers, city officials and youth.
Each Mini-Grant project for 2008 is interconnected. Every project emphasizes the importance of community and displays practical ways that each Woburn resident can engage in their community. If you wish to learn more please continue to check the website for further updates.
